In school, I hold prominent roles as the president and founder of the Economics club and the secretary of the Mu Alpha Theta club. I am also actively involved in numerous STEM and business-related clubs and competitions such as Science Olympiad, Science bowl, AMC, FBLA and DECA. I have been immersed in the art of calligraphy and painting since the age of three and created several portfolios. Additionally, I am also a member of the Li Linhong Chinese music ensemble in which I performed at various events organized by Asian associations like ACDC and OCA on traditional Chinese instrument guzheng, pipa, and drum.

I am deeply committed to making a positive impact on helping others, so I joined the TGC becoming an art and math tutor for many students. I am currently the publicity co-chair of the TGC committee, I learned a lot of organization and management skills through TGC. My involvement has extended to arranging art camps during summer breaks, where I imparted knowledge on painting, colored pencil techniques, and sketching to students of various age groups. TGC has been an incredible platform for showcasing my ability to innovate and create a positive influence in society. This commitment has been recognized with the Gold President Volunteer Service Award. I believe that this journey has not only been meaningful to myself but also to everyone around the world. Some of my other interests are playing the oboe, playing volleyball, listening to music, reading, and exercising. My interest in math prompted me initially to become a tutor at TGC, in freshman year, and from there I’ve tutored a variety of topics in math. In TGC I realized the power of teaching others, as it not only helps students learn but also helps me establish bonds with students. I hope to continue pursuing my interests, and help make a difference in the global community.

Manfred Lim

New York, USA

I'm Manfred Lim, a junior at Jericho High School, driven by my passions for environmental science and business. My focus extends beyond personal interests, as I actively engage in advocacy work to increase awareness of the impacts of climate change on both global and local communities.
Recognized as an international finalist in Project Green Challenge, competing against participants from 48 states and 58 countries, I've been dedicated to making a difference. Currently, my commitment to advancing the field of environmental sciences takes me to Cornell University, where I am working on my own research, employing machine learning to predict global soil respiration rates and identify influencing factors.
In the world of business, I am working on a startup that focuses on sustainable products, aligning with a commitment to environmental responsibility. My achievements extend to FBLA, where I've won multiple first-place state awards and earned national finalist recognition, placing among the top 14 in the nation.
Beyond academics and competitions, my nine-year journey in gardening serves as a hobby and a personal metaphor for growth and potential. Witnessing plants evolve from seeds has always been a source of inspiration.
Starting out in 2021, I've contributed to education through TGC, playing a role from its very beginning. Initially as a math and English teacher, this experience has shown me the impactful role I can play in students' lives worldwide. Regardless of student circumstances, I find pride in having positively influenced others. TGC has been an amazing platform, demonstrating the power of education on a global scale.

Yichu He Emily

Shanghai, China

Hi! My name’s Yichu(Emily)He from Pinghe AP high school in Shanghai. With my aim for social science, I enjoy seeking and understanding human behavior, brain, societies, and cultures.

Tennis, chess, and art are ways for me to pass my free time, as well as reading. Each one offers a unique way to unwind and explore different aspects of myself.

Reading is a great way of self-learning. The books I’m most interested in is the dystopian books where a government concentrate all the power. This allow people to reflect on the thing nowadays and think about the future.

Tennis, with its fast-paced rallies and moments of intense focus, is an exhilarating way to stay active. Chess, on the other hand, allows me to dive into a world of tactics and foresight, almost like a mental workout, particularly in calculating. And art, in my mind, is beautiful way to capture emotions and thoughts, whether through drawing, painting, or any other form of artistic expression. Each hobby contributes to different facets of my life, enhancing cognitive abilities, creativity, and social skills.

Another reason why I enjoy social science is that I love spending time with children. I enjoy to talk with them with their “unrealistic” dreams. It really reminds me of what I’m fighting for in the very beginning. Overall, I wish this volunteer work can really help the children to widen their knowledge and help myself at the same time

I also compete within other competitions such as Science Olympiad. I love reading and writing as well. I write for my school newspaper and I am an editor for Huaxia Chinese Academy Greater New York? During my two years of tutoring, I also taught maths and contributed to designing technical solutions for TGC. I look forward to continuing service learning in the coming years.

Xuange Zhu

Oregon, USA

Hey my name is Circle and I’m a junior at St. Mary’s School in Oregon.

I’m an art geek; I have a very strong sense of personal aesthetics; guitar and piano appeal to me; also I’m a fitness fanatic. I extremely enjoy art and fitness, and they make the biggest part of my life.

In school, I have a high GPA, so academics didn’t bother me. If you get to know me, you will find that I am a completely different person than I seem.

Ada Zhou

New York, USA

I was born and grew up in the world’s most famous melting pot of cultures, New York City. From a young age, I was exposed to the vast diversity of people, activities, and experiences alike. My view of the world developed quickly, with the help of the countless books that I tore through night and day. With these books, my imagination expanded, and so did my creativity. I took on music and art nearly simultaneously at age three; fast forward a dozen years, and I’m nowproficient in four different instruments with an avid hobby of designing and painting old pieces of clothing.

I grew up in an Asian-American household that, as you may alreadyhave guessed, highly prioritized academics. As the oldest of three, I worked to live up to the expectations placed on my shoulders. I’ve earned my way into one of the city’s specialized high schools and managed to hold my honor roll streak, starting all the way from sixth grade. I explored themany new options that I had suddenly gained access to; I entered speech and debate, but later exchanged its back-breaking intense tournaments for Model UN; I reached out to classmates and made lasting connections; I became increasingly aware of the looming idea of graduation and sought out teachers’ and counselors’ advice on college admissions, all the while keeping upmy various extracurriculars and even applying for several volunteering opportunities, one of which is tutoring students of this wonderful organization.

My plans for the future are not as far as they may seem. I have goals to reach, degrees to earn, people tomeet, and places to go. I stand on the road of life that I’ve walked and I look over my shoulder, searching for regrets and sorrow that could be chasing me, and I’m not at all disappointed to see that they’re incapable of reaching me, and may even disappear altogether if I start to run. So I run.

Maggie Li

Toronto, Canada

Hello there! My name is Maggie and I’m a sophomore (Gr.10) in high school. I’m a very diligent student who works hard in school and has obtained all A’s in my subjects. I speak fluent English and a great amount of Mandarin. Some of my favourite hobbies are reading, journaling, and sports. I’ve ranked in the top 2 in my schools for the girls 100m dash since I was in grade four. I have been working with young kids since I was in elementary school where I would watch over younger classes during recesses for teachers while they take a break. I would read with the children and spend time drawing or just aiding them whenever I could. In the summer of 2019, I volunteered at a Chinese summer camp as a counselor in training where I taught young children arts and crafts and prepared snacks and meals for them. This experience required me to learn how to multitask and remain patient. In this job I also worked at the front desk to answer parent’s questions and bring kids from their classes during pick up which required me to be a leader and make sure each child had all their belongings and were accounted for. I’ve learned a lot from my experiences and look forward to learning more through working with you all! I hope we will have an enjoyable time together and learn from each other!

My hands have learned how to play the cello,
So many classes to teach.
My hands learn how to hold other hands,
My Hands have taught me that I couldn’t go so far out without them.
They have taught me to be more confident than ever.”

This poem that I wrote in sixth grade was chosen by my teacher to be shared with the class as a model. My hands can tell stories of who I am, whether I’m holding a hockey stick, a cello bow, or someone else’s hand. Each note I play, each goal I score, and each class I teach all begin with my hands. Since I was five years old, I have grabbed my stick with my hands and begun practicing. I have kept working hard. My hands generate power to shoot or pass. My hands helped me win the State Championship at age 10. My hands helped me become an all-around hockey player during these five years of  AAA  hockey league. My hands let me shape the music I imagine every day. They help me hold my bow so I can play beautiful melodies. My hands have helped me earn a place in one of the most competitive orchestras, CYSO (Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra) since 2021. Even now, I remain one of the youngest cellists in the Concert Orchestra, which is mostly for high school students. My hands helped me qualify for ILMEA District 7 from 2023 to 2025. To this day my hands have helped me achieve All-State Junior High recognition. My hands help me with each note I play for the senior center every year. Beyond sports and music, my hands have also guided me in service and leadership. Through my hands, I have been helping tutor kids through TGC (Tutoring for a Good Cause) since 2020. I was also honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award twice, through my hands. I have learned to serve as a committee member of TGC. To me, my hands are bridges, they connect between thoughts and action, creation and love. Through them I have learned that persistence, discipline, and creativity can transform effort.

Hello, my name is Rocky, a Semifinalist high school student in the National Merit Scholarship Program. I love to explore new areas and challenge myself. For the past two and half years, I have been conducting a science research study comparing a novel rear wing design with a regular rear wing mount for an automotive vehicle to create safer and more fuel-efficient cars. In addition, I conducted research on modeling, and our paper was published in a famous technology journal. To further pursue my curiosity, I dove into the field of robotics with my team, competing in many regional and state games and qualifying for the world’s competition. As my high school Science Olympiad team leader, we engaged in quite a few programs and won the rewards. Finally and importantly, I have been playing chess in tournaments since 6th grade, won more than thirty different regional/state tournaments, played hundreds of hours of chess online, and taken many classes and programs. I trusted myself and paid lots of effort on it, which led to me being elected as high school chess club president and hired by USCF as a professional tutor. Teaching kids chess is one of my favorite parts in life where I’ve gained profound confidence and experience as well as the President's Volunteer Service Award. Believe me, I will lead you to success and be your good friend, so don’t hesitate to reach me should you have any questions or difficulties.

Ethan

Michigan, USA

Hi, my name is Ethan, I live in Michigan, US, and I am a trilingual speaker. I speak Mandarin, English, and German.  I lived in Germany for 8 years. German was almost the first language I started to speak.  At home, as a family rule, we speak Mandarin. I read a lot of Chinese books to keep my culture root through mastering the language.  Shortly before COVID started, I moved to Michigan and started to learn English. Now I am writing my fiction story online in English and teaching in both English and Chinese. I was even elected to the student council in my 5th grade after an English speech.

Sport is one of my favorite things. I love playing tennis and skiing. I spend hours on sports challenging myself trying to go beyond my limit everyday. In addition, I started learning Chinese Martial Arts when I was in Germany and continue doing so here in US. The quote from Bruce Lee was impressive when I saw it the first time. “To be water.” I always try to keep myself flexible in mind and body, like the water.  Music is another big fun I am doing. I enjoy the feeling on stage when I play the pieces during the recitals and competitions of piano. I am also the Cello player of my middle school orchestra.

Two years ago, I started the volunteer teaching German online. I am proud of being a teacher having students all over the world.  Last year, I got the president award for volunteer service with a golden medal. That was the best reward and encourages me to continue my journey helping people around and serving my community.

Hi everyone! My name is Jingmi Chen, and I’m a freshman at Bard College at Simon’s Rock. I was born in Beijing, China but moved to the US at the age of three, and grew up in Connecticut.
At TGC, I have taught English, music theory, piano, and cello for four years now, and earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award all past three years; 100 hours of volunteer work each year.
I started playing the piano at the age of three and challenged myself in different performance and theory examinations through RCM level eight. I was also a student at the Manhattan School of Music, specializing in piano. I played at Carnegie Hall, winning first place for five consecutive years, and I received the Sonatina medal and Early Bach medal with the highest score in the US of that year. I started taking classes at Hua Xia Chinese School of Greater New York when I was five, and as I grew up, I started volunteering as the teacher’s assistant (TA).
Other classes I taught here at TGC included an English book club to children in China where we read through the Magic Treehouse series. We practiced group and independent reading, comprehension questions, and built vocabulary skills. Being fluent in Chinese helped me to better connect with my students as well.
Volunteering at TGC has introduced me to experiences that allowed me to more comfortably interact and communicate with others; I have grown to be more responsible and confident. Passing on my knowledge to my students is something very fulfilling to me. I am so excited to meet all of you and look forward to learning together!!

I often make everyone around me laugh. My favorite subject is science, because I can always bring many wonderful ideas and surprises to my teachers and classmates. After being a student at TGC for one year, I tried to become a teacher. I taught math and reading to children in lower grades. After joining TGC, I became more patient and more responsible. When I first started as a teacher, I was impatient and shy. Now I am more confident and brave. I think this is the biggest gain that TGC has brought me. I am proud of myself as a volunteer.

Ziqi He

Beijing, China

My name is Ziqi He, I am 15 years old, and I am a junior student at Beijing ChenJinglun Junior High School. I am a Leo girl. I have a very proactive personality. I like to find problems, solve problems and unlock new skills.

I am full of interest in studying, and my daily work is relatively easy for me. I have my unique way of acquiring knowledge. For example, I like to learn knowledge by finding the problems and figure them out. That is where the fun of learning comes from. Also, I am not satisfied with what I have learnt in school. In my spare time, I like to train my logic by solving math problems. Besides, I am interested in language, and I am learning French and Japanese right now.
For my hobby, violins and painting are the best parts of my spare time. I thought playing instrument can make me more persistent and creative. When I play violins, there are always some melodies pop in to my mind, and I am even able to compose my own music a little bit. I’ve been learning painting since I was four. In 2018, I held an exhibition of my own painting in France. That was an unforgettable experience for me. In addition, I also won different prizes in various competitions. But, for me, prize is not the most important thing. Painting helps me to describe my inner world and explore possibilities.
During my holiday, I prefer to explore the world and attend social service. I go to some French colleges for intensive art training every summer break. and in August 2019, after came back from Europe, I went to Yan An and He Long with my family. I led the children there to draw with me, and we shared our prospects of our future. Even though some of the children are living in disadvantaged regions, they still take an active approach to pursue their goal.
I am very happy to have this opportunity to communicate with children in different countries. I will do my best in Online teaching.

Oscar Xie

Beijing, China

Hi! My name is Oscar Xie, a 15-year-old boy, who is studying in the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University. In school, I work diligently and always get good scores in examinations. I help my classmates with some academic or daily matters during weekdays as well. Out of school, I have been trying for a variety of hobbies and activities. I am a core member of our school’s debating club and have participated in many debating competitions. Besides, I am definitely a sport- lover, taking part in basketball, football, table tennis, badminton, horse-riding and other intriguing exercise. Lastly, I am absolutely obsessed with literature and I regard writing poem as a vital and dispensable part of my life. That is one of the reasons why I have been teaching Shijing to American adolescents for nearly 2 years.
All in all, that is who I am——a warm-hearted boy with a lot of hobbies in diverse fields. I hope I can continue to help others learn great classics and heritages of Chinese literature in the future,

Ethan Zeng

Hi! My name is Ethan and I am 14 years old and I am a very active person. I play hockey, soccer, basketball as well as swimming. I also venture out when I have free time to do activities such as camping and skiing. In terms of music I’ve also played piano since I was 4, playing up to the ARCT level (RCM). From personal experience I can tell you that it’s extremely hard for people to focus in class. This understanding of children allows me to focus my class on them, and make my class as interactive as possible. Since starting extracurricular math when I was 6 I’ve been taught by so many people. I mold how I tutor off the positive experience I receive off of all these teachers. My experience with all sorts of math teachers is part of the reason why I decided to become a tutor in the first place. I understand how painful it is to sit in class for hours with teachers that seem like they want to be doing something else. I believe that you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world to teach or learn. I just believe that I am the person that is most willing to give you my time and commitment in helping my students succeed.

Angelina Meng

New York, USA

My name is Angelina; I’m a sophomore in high school. I was born and raised in the US. I’ve always been very academic-focused, but I also have many hobbies. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, baking and writing in my free time. I’ve also began to invest a lot of my time in volleyball. It’s one of the few things I’ve felt truly passionate towards. When the COVID pandemic struck, I was fortunate enough to not be affected. But I was concerned about people whose lives did change. For example, the kids who lost their parents or could not go to school were now facing a completely different reality. Wuhan was the first city that got locked down completely in China. When we all went into quarantine, I worked with kids in Wuhan, China and taught them English. NYC was hit severely by the pendamic. When the restrictions lifted a little more, I went into the city and helped hand out food to the disadvantaged people in NYC. Although I can’t change the situation for people whose lives became harder because of COVID, helping them make me feel happy and fulfilled. When I was little, I wanted to grow up and become a teacher. I love being able to help younger kids learn. Passing on my knowledge makes me happy. My mom and my brother have been doing lots of volunteer work for many years. I’d like to think they influenced me into wanting to help others around me as well.

I'm the mastermind behind the East Asia Club. Picture me, your Junior year vice president, turning my school into a hotspot for all things Chinese. We're talking epic activities, mind-blowing presentations – I made learning about China cooler than a popsicle in Antarctica. And wait for this, I’m not just a club VIP; I’m the Mandarin master for the coolest kids in town. Teaching Chinese? Piece of cake. We’re talking games that will make you laugh and Chinese songs that will have you dancing in your dream. So, buckle up, future students! My class isn't just a class; it's a fiesta of fun.
