Elaine Guo

Hi, I’m Elaine Guo, a rising senior at the Charter School of Wilmington in Delaware, USA.

Throughout high school, I have demonstrated leadership through various organizations, including Business Professionals of America (BPA), Mock Trial, and Student Government. As the State President of BPA, I have led more than 2,000 members, organized statewide conferences, and collaborated with national officers. In addition, I have had the opportunity to compete in BPA myself, earning 5th place nationally. Through BPA, I have advocated for expanded educational opportunities for youth within Career and Technical Education organizations.

Additionally, I have developed my debate and case argumentation skills through Mock Trial and represented student perspectives in Student Government. These experiences have strengthened my public speaking, collaboration, and organizational abilities, motivating me to bring these skills to Tutoring for a Good Cause (TGC) as well.
The ultimate goal of TGC is to provide free academic and artistic support to students seeking to either catch up or get ahead. I strongly believe in the value of community service and the positive impact it can have on the learning process.
Outside of my academic extracurricular activities, I enjoy playing the piano and figure skating in my free time. I am a junior figure skating coach and hold a black belt in Taekwondo. I am excited to help lead TGC’s operations over the coming year and serve as a role model for aspiring students.

Hi! My name is Serena Dai, I am 16 years old, and I am a senior at Ed W. Clark High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been a figure skater since I was 8 years old and I play the violin. In my free time, I tend to crochet and craft. In school, I am involved with many CTE organizations such as DECA, FBLA, HOSA, USABO, and TSA. I have a passion in math and biology and I participate in Forensics Club and Bio Tutoring Club. I love to help people with their studies, which is why I decided to start teaching math at TGC in my freshman year. Not only have I been able to gain new skills such as public speaking, I have also been able to review information which has helped me in my own studies as well. I hope to teach my students topics to a deeper level so they can understand the reasoning behind the processes that they use in math.

Hello, I am Chloe Wang. 
As an award-winning writer and artist, writing has always been a way for me to explore ideas, understand different perspectives, and meaningfully connect with others. This passion motivated me to study creative writing through Iowa Young Writers’ Studio. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to discover their own voice through writing so I teach weekly creative writing classes to students from different backgrounds and around the world, encouraging young writers to express themselves with confidence.
Beyond writing, I am passionate about human rights, youth empowerment, and creating opportunities for youth to have their voices heard. 
There is the common saying, “Youth are the future,” but I believe youth are not just the future; we are the present. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, all capable of creating meaningful change. As an advocate, I have served as a main speaker at both national and international consultations, including events at Capitol Hill. Outside of writing and activism, I am a Team USA Aspiring Dominant Athlete in Taekwondo, ranked #1 nationally in my division. Through years of training and competition, Taekwondo has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up because every second counts. 
Whether through a story, a speech, a brushstroke, or a Taekwondo match, I believe every action has the power to make a difference. I hope to use my passions to empower others, amplify youth voices, and inspire a generation to believe in their ability to create changes.

Astraea Liu

Hi everyone! My name is Astraea Liu, and I’m a rising junior from Taiwan.
 
I first joined TGC six years ago as a student, never expecting that I would eventually find my way back as a teacher. Since then, I’ve met several dozens of students of my own, accumulating 350+ hours of teaching through literary analysis camps, self-designed creative writing curricula, and weekly history lessons, ultimately culminating in the acquisition of PVSA Gold in 2025. It’s a little surreal to have grown alongside a program that has shaped so much of how I learn and think – and to now have the opportunity to contribute to it in return.
 
I’m especially interested in history, philosophy, education, and social justice, which I explore through my research and the occasional blog post. Most recently, I received a Very High Commendation for the John Locke Essay Competition, placing in the top 1% of applicants. Whether I’m writing an essay, designing a curriculum, or building a project, I enjoy watching an idea take shape, leave my hands, and become something that other people can see, question, or make their own.
 
That impact-centered objective has also shaped the way I approach education. During a summer internship, I helped develop and code an adaptive English-learning program based on Taiwan’s nationwide English assessment in partnership with KIST. The program was designed specifically for rural Taiwanese teachers, where limited staffing and heavy teacher workloads can make individualized analysis difficult to sustain. The application is now being piloted in schools across Taiwan, with plans for nationwide expansion. 
 
Outside of school, you can find me sketching new designs for my sticker business, designing promotional visuals for local animal shelters, or wandering through Taiwan’s art stalls and stationery stores. Whatever form it takes, I love the small thrill of watching something I made take on a meaning of its own in someone else’s world.
 
In a way, that is what TGC has been for me. Six years ago, I was the student receiving something that someone else had taken the time to make, teach, and pass forward. Now, I get to stand on the other side of that exchange. I’m looking forward to returning to TGC and leaving behind something of my own – something a future student might pick up and carry with them, as I once did – until, years from now, it finds its way into yet another student’s hands.

Winnie Gong

Hey, I’m Winnie Gong, currently a 9th grader at SFLSID here in Shanghai, China. I joined TGC all the way back in 5th grade, when I was just beginning to explore various leadership roles, and ultimately, teaching kids English here became one of the earliest and most meaningful ones.
In my free time, I’m actively involved in debate activities, as a competition participant and also an organizer. I’ve gotten championships and multiple speaker awards over the seasons and is the campus ambassador for 3 different well-known debating programs both within China and overseas.
I’m also devoted to American scouting, is presently a senior scout that just achieved the 1st class rank, and also serving as the scribe in PLC.
Comprehensively, volunteering and teaching younger peers about the things I’m passionate about is a true blessing, and I sincerely hope to continue for the years to come.

Ethan Zeng

Hi! My name is Ethan and I am 14 years old and I am a very active person. I play hockey, soccer, basketball as well as swimming. I also venture out when I have free time to do activities such as camping and skiing. In terms of music I’ve also played piano since I was 4, playing up to the ARCT level (RCM). From personal experience I can tell you that it’s extremely hard for people to focus in class. This understanding of children allows me to focus my class on them, and make my class as interactive as possible. Since starting extracurricular math when I was 6 I’ve been taught by so many people. I mold how I tutor off the positive experience I receive off of all these teachers. My experience with all sorts of math teachers is part of the reason why I decided to become a tutor in the first place. I understand how painful it is to sit in class for hours with teachers that seem like they want to be doing something else. I believe that you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world to teach or learn. I just believe that I am the person that is most willing to give you my time and commitment in helping my students succeed.

Derek Gao

“Time flies by as my hands help me through life.

So many hockey practices.
My hands have learned how to play the cello,
So many classes to teach.
My hands learn how to hold other hands,  
My Hands have taught me that I couldn’t go so far out without them.
They have taught me to be more confident than ever.”

This poem that I wrote in sixth grade was chosen by my teacher to be shared with the class as a model. My hands can tell stories of who I am, whether I’m holding a hockey stick, a cello bow, or someone else’s hand. Each note I play, each goal I score, and each class I teach all begin with my hands. Since I was five years old, I have grabbed my stick with my hands and begun practicing. I have kept working hard. My hands generate power to shoot or pass. My hands helped me win the State Championship at age 10. My hands helped me become an all-around hockey player during these five years of  AAA  hockey league. My hands let me shape the music I imagine every day. They help me hold my bow so I can play beautiful melodies. My hands have helped me earn a place in one of the most competitive orchestras, CYSO (Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra) since 2021. Even now, I remain one of the youngest cellists in the Concert Orchestra, which is mostly for high school students. My hands helped me qualify for ILMEA District 7 from 2023 to 2025. To this day my hands have helped me achieve All-State Junior High recognition. My hands help me with each note I play for the senior center every year. Beyond sports and music, my hands have also guided me in service and leadership. Through my hands, I have been helping tutor kids through TGC (Tutoring for a Good Cause) since 2020. I was also honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award twice, through my hands. I have learned to serve as a committee member of TGC. To me, my hands are bridges, they connect between thoughts and action, creation and love. Through them I have learned that persistence, discipline, and creativity can transform effort.

Hello! My name is Tianjie Jiang, and I am currently a sophomore at Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have strong interests in music, volleyball, electronic hardware, coding, and education. I actively participate in a variety of STEM and business-related competitions, including AMC, TSA, DECA, FBLA, and Model Bridge. Additionally, I have auditioned for multiple state-level honors bands and have competed in the Solo and Ensemble festival.
My passion for teaching and tutoring began in seventh grade when I joined TGC as a tutor, a role I have maintained ever since. Through these experiences, I have gained great appreciation for the meaningful impact I can have on students around the world. I look forward to continuing to support others in their educational journeys.

Hello, my name is Dylan Guo, and I am an incoming freshman at the Charter School of Wilmington in Delaware, USA.
As a dedicated chess player, I have grown both as a competitor and as an individual. What began as a personal interest developed into a passion for competitive chess, leading me to earning multiple awards at prestigious competitions, including the World Open and Beltway Open.
Beyond chess, I am passionate about STEM and community service. I was a World Champion in the Odyssey of the Mind competition and a national competitor in Science Olympiad. Additionally, I am a key member of my school’s math team, which has earned multiple state championship titles in Math League and MATHCOUNTS. Over the past two years, I have completed more than 300 hours of volunteer service, supporting local shelters, assisting at school events, and tutoring students in subjects such as mathematics, reading, music theory, and chess. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the power of education and mentorship to help students build confidence and achieve their goals.
Additionally, I serve as the TSA Chapter Sergeant-at-Arms and the BPA Chapter Vice President. My Financial Management Portfolio team placed 2nd at the national competition. I am a competitive figure skater and a Taekwondo black belt. Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of collaboration, initiative, and leadership in creating positive outcomes.

Lina Marron

Hi everyone! My name is Lina Marron, and I’m a rising sophomore at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City. I’m a member of my school’s debate team, currently ranked #1 nationally. I’ve always been interested in public speaking and argumentation, but one of the most important things debate has taught me is that being a good speaker isn’t just about having something to say. It’s about listening carefully, understanding where someone else is coming from, and being willing to change or refine your own thinking.
I’m also involved in the MANNE Research Institute, where I’ve been exploring my interests in biology and neuroscience. Research teaches me a different kind of patience than debate. Unlike a textbook problem, experiments don’t always have a neat answer waiting at the bottom of the page. Sometimes an idea doesn’t work, the results make no sense, or you realize that you probably should have thought something through a little more carefully. You have to ask better questions, figure out what went wrong, and try again. It can be frustrating, but I’ve learned that the process of getting something wrong and understanding why is often where the most interesting part begins.
Outside of debate and research, I’ve played violin for several years. Violin is the most different of the three, and it teaches me a lot about patience, consistency, and paying attention to details that are easy to overlook. Science makes me ask why something happens, debate makes me ask how I can explain it, and music makes me slow down and pay attention to the details. It’s also taught me that improvement is rarely as dramatic as you want it to be. Most of the time, it comes from doing something again and again until one day you realize that something that used to be difficult has quietly become easier.
What connects these different parts of my life is that I’m happiest when I’m actively figuring something out. I like asking questions, testing ideas, and gradually getting better at something that didn’t come easily at first. I’m still figuring out where these interests will take me, but for now, I’m enjoying the process of learning, trying new things, and meeting people who are doing the same.

Sophie Wang

I am a senior at Syosset High School. I started tutoring at TGC since 8th grade. I also co-developed and currently manage the TGC website. Outside of tutoring, I also like fundraising for various causes, for example my clubs at high school and also for blood cancer. Besides community service, I also like coding apps, websites, and projects. I am also the captain of my school’s varsity fencing team and run my school’s K-pop Dance Club and STEM Newsletter club. I also co-founded my school’s Asian Pacific Islander Student Union club where we host school-wide potlucks and celebrate holidays like Mooncake Festival and Lunar New Year. I am also part of my school’s advanced research program from grades 10-12 and worked on a project involving Monte Carlo Simulation to predict blood type distribution where I won a gold medal at a local math fair and also used R to code a SEM analysis to look at different factors contributing to the underrepresentation of women in engineering. I have won many STEM awards, like qualifying for AIME and achieving USACO Gold.
